The ultimate guide to set your Alfa card AWUS036H to the max 1000 mW

Again, the ALFA cards are pretty much crap. Luckily, the TP-LINK card showed excellent results. Depending on your data rate and packet loss reliability requirements (the retransmission flag of the tx program) you can use these numbers to find the right modulation scheme. Assume you have a video stream with 6mbit/s (enough for h264 HD) you can fit that easily into the MCS3 modulation, even with one retransmission.

Set your Alfa card AWUS036H to the max 1000 mW

This prevents NetworkManager from trying to resolve the interface using its own stuff when you reboot again (real men keep NetworkManager disabled anyway, but whatever). If your PC already has a wlan0 assigned by default (i.e. is a laptop with built-in wifi), the keyfile above should work fine. Otherwise, just add interface-name:wlan0; before interface-name:wlan1; The reason I also disabled a second, nonexistent wlan2 at the end is because sometimes, if I unplug the interface and replug it into a different USB port, it will be assigned one number up. This measure adds one get-out-of-NetworkManager-free card to your hand, increasing your chance to pass go and collect that sweet $200.

One wireless adapter (optional): Depending on the wireless card of your laptop, we may need a USB Wi-Fi card that can support packet injection and packet sniffing, which is supported by Kali. The best choice seems to be the Alfa AWUS036H card from Alfa Networks, as Kali supports this out-of-the-box. This is available on www.amazon.com for a retail price of 18 at the time of writing. An alternative option is the Edimax EW-7711UAN, which is smaller and, marginally, cheaper.

The MAC address 00:c0:ca:3e:bd:93 should match the MAC address written under your Alfa card. I am using the Edimax that gives me the preceding MAC address 80:1f:02:8f:34:d5. This is a quick check to ensure that you have enabled the correct interface.
