*This transmission is part of a joint-venture between General Motors and Ford Motor Company to split development of two transmissions, a longitudinal 10-speed and transverse 9-speed. Ford led the design of the 10-speed transmission, as well as filing the design patents for said transmission. According to an official report by the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) the design of the 10-speed gearbox is essentially all Ford, while GM was responsible for designing the 9-speed 9T transverse automatic gearbox. As part of their joint-venture, Ford will let GM use the 10-speed transmission with rights to modify and manufacture it for their own applications. In-exchange for Ford's 10-speed transmission, General Motors will let Ford use its 9-speed transmission for front-wheel drive applications; Ford ultimately declined use of the 9T and instead, removed 1 gear and used the 9T as an 8-speed transmission.[2][3][4]
Do you know how to tell the difference between a Saginaw, a T10, and a Muncie four-speed? The easiest way is by knowing the construction of each unit, and the differences are obvious. If the case and side cover are made of cast iron, that would make it a Saginaw transmission. If it has a cast-iron case with an aluminum side cover and tail housing, that will mean you have found a Borg Warner. To add a little confusion to the mix, there were Borg-Warner Transmissions that feature aluminum cases and cast-iron side covers. Differentiating is easy, as the Muncie has seven bolts holding the side cover, and the Borg-Warner uses nine.

The materials used in case construction of a Muncie/Chevy four-speed mean that if you find one of these gear boxes in a shed or barn, the Muncie will probably be smooth and covered in grease and/or oil, while a Borg Warner or Saginaw transmission will usually be coated in a light layer of rust.
The gear ratio of the Chevy four-speed transmission placed in any car was usually determined by the engine size and rearend axle ratio. If a car came with an axle ratio of 3.73 (or numerically higher), it usually came with a close-ratio transmission. Vehicles leaving the factory with an axle ratio of 3.55 and numerically lower gears, typically incorporated a wide-ratio transmission.

Have you ever wondered, "What transmission do I have?" As time marches on, technology changes. Classic car restoration is not a new hobby, and the older the project car, the more likely it is that someone has installed a different transmission at some point along the way. Modern 6-speeds are easy to spot, and 5-speeds are not difficult either, but when it comes to older 4-speeds and automatics, the increased variety can muddy the waters. So, whether you are heading out to check out a "For Sale" ad that could be your next project or trying to make heads or tails of a junkyard find, the following charts can be useful guides when it comes to GM transmission identification.
As mentioned above, modern 5-speed and 6-speed manual transmissions are easy to identify, but older 4-speed transmissions have more variety. While there are no distinctive pans and bolt counts to make transmission identification simple, 4-speed manual transmissions can be generally identified by examining the side profile. The shape of the main housing will give a reasonably reliable indication of the transmission group to which your gearbox belongs. Unfortunately, this makes transmission identification difficult to accomplish while the gearbox is installed in the vehicle.
The small block 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle 327 CI 4-speed looked rather benign compared to the big muscle cars of its day. However, the combination of a somewhat lighter chassis, the powerful V8 engine and a four-speed manual transmission proved to be surprisingly formidable. The small block V8 certainly succeeded in taking on its big-block competitors, thanks in part to its superior weight-power ratio. Some of the big mid-60s Hemi muscle cars could outrace the Chevelle 327 CI, but the margin of victory was usually less than several car lengths.
The 327 cu-in (5.4 L) small block L79 engine was the most powerful one offered in the 1967 Chevelle. There was a standard 275-hp version and an upgraded 350-hp version. The latter was offered only with a four-speed manual transmission. For the 1967 model year, Chevy lowered the horsepower rating to 325, even though the L79 engine was identical to the one sold the previous year. In the mid-60s, there was a trend among manufacturers to actually understate horsepower, largely to keep insurance premiums down.
Chevy Supply of Assonet offers a great selection of vintage Chevy car transmissions that will meet the needs of most classic Chevy auto restoration projects or classic Chevy car transmission overhauls. We have vintage Chevy automatic transmissions, and 3-speed & 4-speed manual transmissions in stock.
Another but less common transmission type is the electronically controlled transmission, which you will find on a few newer vehicles. These transmissions use hydraulics to actuate the bands and clutches. But an electric solenoid controls each hydraulic circuit. Different versions of automatic transmissions exist, but today, the 4-speed automatic transmission will be discussed.
Regarding fuel efficiency and performance, the two versions of the automatic transmission are similar. This is why many auto experts recommend opting for a 4-speed automatic transmission, especially if the automobile is available at a pocket-friendly price.
What is Loop Carpet?\r\n\r\nThis carpet is designed to match carpets used in most domestic vehicles manufactured before 1974.\r\nThis carpet material is composed of 100% type 6,6 Nylon yarn called Raylon.\r\nIt is tufted to a 1\/8 gauge loop \u0026amp; contains 20 ounces of yarn per square yard.\r\nIt is dyed using the finest dyes available and tested for ozone humidity fading \u0026amp; light fastness.\r\n Carpet Description\r\n\r\nFit Guaranteed.\r\nHighest quality material used.\r\nHeat and pressure molded to an original floor pan to ensure exact fit.\r\nUnless otherwise specified, most carpets come uncut, and buyer will need to cut holes as needed.\r\nHeelpad is included for vehicles that original came with one attached to their carpet.\r\n\r\nInstallation Tips\r\n\r\nPlease make sure the carpet fits the floor pan before making any cuts or alterations. This will allow the carpet to retake its molded shape.\r\nWhen test fitting it into the vehicle you'll likely notice that there will be additional material on the sides. That's completely normal, you'll need to trim it to the desired width. \r\nIf a hole is needing to be cut for seats, console, etc, it is always best to start with a small slice as a test fit. Slices can be easily taped back together if they are in the wrong spot, holes cannot.\r\nNever use the old carpet as a template for the new one.
